World

The World is the main setting in the God of War franchise.

In Greek Mythology

In Greek Mythology, the world was believed to be flat like a disc, with the flat land being surrounded on all sides by ocean with the heavens and sky above.

In the God of War series

Composition

The World of God of War is generally portrayed as consisting of the heavens above, etc. the universe with galaxies and nebulae, the upper world beneath it, a flat world that contains the large Mount Olympus and all seven continents, and the Underworld directly below; a chasm of infinite size ruled by Hades where the souls of the dead head to. To prevent the collapse of all of creation, the Pillar of the World rests in the middle of both realms and supports the upper world. The destruction of its top forced the Titan Atlas to do this instead.

The Island of Creation is said to rest at the western edge of the world, being so isolated from the rest of the disc that even a nonstop flight took six days to reach it.

Trivia

  • While God of War: Ascension shows an image of a round Earth, contradicting the earlier portrayals of a flat planet, it was later revealed by the animation director that it was merely an easter egg to another series, and that it had nothing to do with God of War.
  • Bonus content for God of War I confirms that the Underworld is infinite in size. In addition, Cecil Kim (Concept Artist, God of War III) stated that the Underworld was infinite on an interview.
  • The general God of War cosmology of a three-tiered universe (the sky above, the earth in the middle and the underworld below) is largely derived from the real-life Homeric view of the cosmos (which dates from the 8th century B.C.E.). However, while Homer and his contemporaries believed the sky formed a solid, vaulted dome ("firmament") over the disc-shaped Earth, God of War clearly holds the heavens/universe outside of the Earth to be normal.
