God of War Ghost of Sparta Playthrough Part 4 06439

Thera's Bane

“Free me. Free me and my power will be yours. Without it we will both remain prisoners of our torments.” - Thera

Thera’s Bane is a new ability that Kratos acquires in God of War: Ghost of Sparta. He rips this power from the chest of the Titan Thera as he frees her from her prison beneath the volcano of Atlantis. It has the ability to engulf the Blades of Athena in fire, increasing their damage and allowing Kratos to destroy the shields and armour of various creatures. Thera's Bane can also be used to open damaged doors by placing a Searing Core in the center of the door, causing an explosion.

Trivia

  • Thera is the name of an island in Greece north of Crete that was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 15th Century. According to Plato, the same eruption sank Atlantis.
  • Thera's Bane can kill weakened enemies by burning them the same way The Efreet does in God of War: Chains of Olympus.
  • While using Thera's Bane, Kratos will not stagger, but remains vulnerable.
  • Some enemies, including Thanatos and Erinys, wore armour that rendered them invulnerable to all attacks. Kratos was only able to defeat them by using this ability against them, to destroy their shielding.
  • In the final battle, the death of Deimos spurred Kratos' rage to such heights that the Blades of Athena became engulfed in Thera's Bane for the remainder of the battle.
  • You can ignite the Blades of Athena while in the middle of a combo. With this trick, you can see the animation effect quickly changing as you perform a combo.
  • Holding the L and R triggers will ignite the Blades of Athena while blocking and allows you to perform fiery counterattacks. Also, when you time L and R triggers during an enemy attack, the special effect will be ignited with fire.
