The Abandoned Village is a region of Vanaheim introduced in God of War: Ragnarök.
Plot[]
Backstory[]
The Abandoned Village was Freya and Freyr's home. As children, they shared many happy memories together as a family, but as the war with the Aesir raged for so long, to end the bloodshed, Mimir proposed that Freya marry Odin. For a long time, the marriage successfully brought peace between Asgard and Vanaheim, and Freya left home to stay in Asgard with her new husband. However, as time passed, Odin's obsession with knowledge and control, and the atrocities he would commit to gain them grew worse.
When Freya put a wrench in his plans against the Jötnar, Odin stripped Freya of her powers and fighting spirit, and permanently banished her to Midgard. After that, Odin would invade Vanaheim again, commanding his Einherjar to occupy the realm once more, killing or forcing many Vanir into hiding.
Freya's home village was no exception to this. In particular, Odin would heavily fortify the village with his forces, and house the curse keeping her trapped in Midgard there, as a sick way of desecrating Freya's memories of her home, should she somehow return.
In God of War Ragnarök[]
After Baldur's death at Kratos' hand, the curses that Odin wrought upon Freya weakened due to Fimbulwinter. After breaking most of the curses and regaining her powers herself, Freya would pursue Kratos and Atreus to exact revenge for her son.
After coming close to it at the pair's home, however, she couldn't bring herself to see it through. Instead, she formed a temporary truce with Kratos, enlisting his help in breaking the curse binding her to Midgard.
As they follow the source of the magic, they find that the curse is being housed in Freya's village, and more specifically her family's own house.
