God of War Wiki

The Imprisonment of Týr was a fundamental and much mentioned event in both God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. It involves the centuries-long imprisonment of the Norse God of War Týr by Thor and the All-Father Odin. Following Týr's incarceration, Odin lies to all the realms that his son is dead, leading many, including Freya and Mimir to believe that Týr is gone forever.

However, centuries later, in the aftermath of Ragnarök, in which the realm of Asgard was destroyed, the Asgardian prison crash-landed in Niflheim. While Kratos and Freya traversed the prison, they discovered and freed Týr, ending his imprisonment for good.

History[]

Prelude[]

When Týr attempted to open relations between his clan, the Aesir, and their long-time enemies, the Jötnar, by inviting Odin to a summit with the Giants, but Odin only agreed in order to steal the secrets of Jötunheim. The giants saw Odin's sinister intentions and expelled Odin from Jötunheim, banishing with a curse that prevented him from ever returning. In his fury Odin retaliated by ordering Thor to go on a genocidal campaign to slaughter any giant he could find. This proved too much for Týr, who turned against Odin to aid the Jötnar in cutting Jötunheim off from the other realms.

Imprisonment[]

Odin would eventually come to regard Týr as a threat to his rule and correctly suspected that his son is plotting with the Jötnar instead of helping to steal their secrets for the Aesir's benefits. As a result, Týr was secretly imprisoned in Asgard and Odin, rather than having him executed, decided to spare him as he could be of usage. The All-father and Thor then proceeded to trick the rest of the nine realms into believing that Týr is dead.

Freed from the prison[]

Centuries later, in the aftermath of Ragnarök, the prison where Týr is confined to landed in Niflheim. Gná, the Valkyrie Queen, gave out orders to the surviving Einherjar to make haste to the prison to ensure Týr will never escape. Despite their efforts, the Einherjar failed to stop Kratos and Freya from reaching and discovering Týr's prison cell. Ultimately, as a result, Týr is finally freed, thus ending his centuries-long imprisonment.
