This sword is the mighty, flaming sword wielded by the Ruler of Muspelheim and the first and last of the Fire Giants, Surtr the Brave.

Norse Mythology

The sword is the personal weapon of the fire giant Surtr, which he uses during Ragnarök. In the poem Völuspá, Surtr's sword is described as being a very bright sword that shines with the sun of the Gods of the slain. In Chapter 51 of the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning, the enthroned figure of Third describes the sword as being very fine and that the light that shines from the blade is more brighter than the sun itself. During his destined battle with the Vanir God Freyr, Surtr kills the latter with his sword before raining fire over both the heavens and the earth.

Background

When Surtr learned of his destiny in which he and his wife Sinmara will combine with each other to become a single creature called Ragnarök, he prevents himself from getting involved. However, in case it does come to pass, he tried to forge a fiery sword that is powerful enough to destroy Asgard, but fails. For eons, he tried again and again and again, but still proved to be unsuccessful. Despite his failures, Surtr refused to give up and still continued to try and create a fiery sword in his forge.

God of War (2018)

The sword only appears in Surtr's shrine in Musphelheim, in which it is depicted with having flames on the blade, which explains why it is referred to by Atreus as a "flaming sword" and by Mimir as a "weapon of legend" and a "sword of flame". The tip of the sword is shown to look bended in appearance.

God of War Ragnarök

Surtr's Sword Prophecy — The sword as it appears in the prophecy of Ragnarök

The sword first appears in the true prophecy of Ragnarök in which it would be wielded by a monstrous creature called Ragnarök to destroy Asgard.

During the invasion of Asgard, in which Surtr emerges as Ragnarök itself, he pulls the sword out off the portal he is in before planting it on the ground. The sword can be seen beside Ragnarök as he trys to get rid of the Vanir God Freyr who is trying to slow the creature down from destroying Asgard. Later, after Odin was killed, Ragnarök used it to destroy Asgard by plunging it into the very heart of the realm, which resulted in Freyr's death, as he sacrificed himself to allow his sister Freya to escape to safety with their allies.

Powers and Abilities

Surtr's sword is one of the most powerful weapons in all the Nine Realms. Mimir describes it as a weapon of legend and that it is capable of destroying Asgard with a single tremendous blow. It is later proved to be true as it only took Surtr plunging the sword twice or even just once (if Freyr didn't shield the first blow) to destroy Asgard. The sword seems to be able to burn the realm down slowly before finally destroying the realm completely.

Trivia

There is a sword that looks like it belongs to Surtr, however God of War Ragnarök rebuked this fact.
- As a result, the giant sword in Musphelheim is merely used for Surtr's Gauntlet.
