Kratos battles a Sphinx.

The Sphinx is a lion-like creature in the God of War franchise.

Mythology[]

The Sphinx is a famous creature from both Egyptian and Greek mythology.

In Greek mythology, the Sphinx is depicted as a monster with the body of a lion sometimes with wings) and the head of a human female where it is said to be one of the children of Echidna. She would give a riddle where it would kill anyone who couldn't solve it. When it came to Oedipus, the Sphinx gave him the riddle "What animal walks on four legs during the morning, two during the day, and three during the evening?" Oedipus answered "Man. As a baby, he crawls on four legs. As an adult, he walks on two. And when in his later years, he hobbles on a cane." With the riddle solved, the Sphinx killed herself.

In Egyptian mythology, the Sphinx is depicted as a human headed lion wearing a Pharaoh's crown. This was the description of the Androsphinx. Other Egyptian Sphinxes are the ram-headed Criosphinx and the hawk-headed Hieracosphinx.

It appears similar to its counterpart the Morpheus Beast, except that it's much stronger, it's fur is brown and it's not wreathed in fog. The Sphinx also has a similar fighting style, except that it breathes fire. Kratos also kills the beast in the same style as the Morpheus Beast.

Trivia[]

  • The design of the Sphinx in Chains of Olympus has changed a lot between the concept art and the actual appearance in the game. In the concept art, the sphinx looks like most interpretations, half woman, half lion with wings on her back. In the game, it looks like a sabre toothed cat.
  • The sphinx was supposed to appear in God of War (2018), back when it was originally set in Ancient Egypt. However, it never appeared in the final game, as it was switched to the Norse world.
