Skofnung was the sword of the berserker king Hrólf Kraki. Once known as the sharpest sword in Midgard, it was used to house the berserker king's soul along with those of his fellow berserkers. Skofnung's hilt can only be obtained after Kratos kills Hrólf Kraki.
Norse Mythology[]
Skofnung is the sword of the legendary Danish king Hrólf Kraki. It was renewed for its supernatural sharpness and hardness as well as being imbued with the spirits of Hrólf Kraki's 12 berserker bodyguards.
History[]
Skofnung was wielded by King Hrólf Kraki during his lifetime and was also used to house his soul along with the rest of his berserker followers when they died. Years later, Skofnung's hilt was found on a broken berserker gravestone by Kratos. The Spartan would then use the hilt to summon Hrólf Kraki's berserkers before slaying them. Finally, Skofnung's hilt was used to summon King Hrólf Kraki himself, who took back his sword. After a long battle, Kratos managed to forcefully take Skofnung from the berserker king and drove it into his chest, weakening Hrólf Kraki and allowing Kratos to decapitate him. After the berserker king's death, Kratos takes Skofnung for himself; Mimir expressed his misgivings, knowing all to well the sword's legacy of treachery. But Kratos sagely assures his disembodied friend that he will only employ Skofnung for noble purposes and that he intends to write its tale anew in so doing. Later generations to come into possessing the sword, or even hear tales of it, are then free to harbor their own opinions about Skofnung. From then on, Skofnung is then used as magical relic.
