Seiðr or Seiðr Magic is a type of magic practiced by humans and Vanir gods, it is among its many powers is responsible for the creation of Shadows and Revenants.
Norse Mythology[]
Seiðr is an ancient sorcery practice by the worshiping priests of the Vanir gods, especially the Gods Freyr and Freyja who were the patron deities of that magic. It was believed that Seiðr is a form of magic that is related to telling and shaping the future.
In God of War[]
Seiðr is a well-known power in the Nine Realms. Before the Desolation, it was rarely practiced or used as the usage of Seiðr is considered disgraceful or unmanly. However, when the desolation came, many Revenants and Reavers had began delving into the dark arts through different means, which would permanently twist and corrupt them into what they currently are and they lost most of their humanity if they successfully mastered the use of Seiðr magic.
The Revenants, who are faithful followers of the practice, would trade bits of their own souls so that they could become more powerful with that dark magic, which would slowly make them lose their own humanity. As for the Seiðr Reavers they began to overuse Seiðr magic which corrupted them in the process as well as alter their appearance. However, the dark magic the learned also gave them the ability to heal themselves when injured. For the Shadows, a Seiðr Reaver variant and another follower of Seiðr, they use that magic for range-combat in which they launch magical projectiles from afar.
Uses[]
Seidr Magic manifests in a neon green mist or vapor and has many uses that have been seen throughout history:
- Poisonous Effigy: Seidr Magic can create magical effigies that emanate a highly lethal magical poison.
- Empowerment: Some effigies can amplify the user's powers as well as increase physical regeneration.
- Toxokinesis: Some users focus their use of seidr on poisonous spells which weaken enemies.
- Curses: Seidr magic can cast powerful curses on others.
Trivia[]
- Seiðr is one of the common forms of Magic employed in the Nine Realm with Runes being as common.
- It's unknown why the Seiðr spells used by the Aesir and Vanir gods, dwarves and giants don't corrupt their users. As it could be linked to the rules Mimir said. That Vanir magic or Seiðr is powerful magic but that has confusing rules that makes sense if you're a witch. So the nature of the Seiðr might be neutral and only the failure to understand and adhere to its innate rules could be why some become corrupted by it. It also could explain why the Aesir failed to use it correctly, as only Odin had the patience and intelligence to make the spells work correctly. It also explains how other Seiðr spells can purify or heal. There is also the possibility that mortals aren't able to control it and thus have to give up pieces of their soul.
