The Rift of Creation is a magical tear that appeared at the very place Odin slew his great-grandfather Ymir. Located beneath The Great Lodge in Asgard, the Rift is linked to the enigmatic Mask of Creation and is the key to the All-Father's obsession with knowledge.
Description and Backstory[]
The Rift is a magical, green-glowing tear in the fabric of reality, which opened after Odin killed Ymir, the first Giant and first being to emerge from Ginnungagap. It was believed by Odin to be a peephole into creation itself, and that finding a way to open and look into it would grant him infinite knowledge on life and death. Odin would spend much of his life trying to find a way to open the rift, which would spark his obsession with knowledge, eventually growing into something dangerous, as he sought to control everything and everyone around him for the sake of fueling his ambitions. After hearing of his foretold death, Odin hoped to find the missing fragments of the Mask of Creation in order to look into the Rift and uncover what kind of afterlife awaited him, and find out of there was a way to change his fate. As Atreus collected fragments of the Mask, the tear would grow bigger and shine brighter.
Towards the end of Ragnarök, Odin attempted to convince Atreus to put on the Mask and peer into the Rift. However, Atreus instead broke the mask which caused it to be sucked into the Rift that immediately then collapsed on itself and disappeared forever, causing all of Odin's efforts to be in vain and leaving the All-Father in a state of horror and wrath.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown what exactly was on the other side of the Rift. Odin had claimed that the Rift had "whispered" things to him that he did not understand (as if being spoken to in a foreign language) but knew were true. This could mean that an unseen being belonging to the Rift had talked to Odin, which started his life-long obsession with the Mask, which is somehow linked with the Rift, or whatever lies beyond it.
- When Athena reached what she described as a "higher existence" in God of War III, her new form glowed with a light-green aura similar to that of the Rift. This has led some to theorize that whatever level of existence she reached was somehow connected to the Rift.
