God of War Wiki

The Prison of the Damned was a massive prison that served to imprison those who had broken their blood oaths. It was ruled with an iron fist by The Furies, who served as the wardens of the prison and would torture oathbreakers until they are driven to madness. The Prison of the Damned came to symbolize those who would break a blood oath with a God, as it was built on the Hecatonchires Aegaeon, the first to break a blood oath.

History[]

When Aegaeon the Hecatonchires made a blood oath to Zeus, the king of Mount Olympus, only to then later betray him, this makes the hundred-giant the first being to break a blood oath. Intolerable of this, Zeus sends the Furies after Aegaeon. Upon his capture, the latter was ruthlessly tortured for his betrayal. Believing that killing him is too merciful, the Furies decided to make him a symbol to remind those of the consequences if they dare break an oath with a god.

They converted his very flesh and bones into the very walls of the Prison of the Damned, which was constructed throughout his body, even within his mouth and torso. At an unknown point, The Scribe of Hecatonchires was incarcerated within the prison, as he was the first mortal to be an oathbreaker. During his time as a prisoner, he would continuously write records of what he knew about the Furies so as not to lose his sanity.

God of War: Ascension[]

After Kratos was tricked by Ares into murdering his wife and daughter, the Spartan renounces his allegiance to the God of War, thus breaking his blood oath. This caused the Furies, who had become allies of Ares, to ruthlessly pursue him, even tormenting him with illusions. Kratos was eventually captured by the sisters at the Statue of Apollo and he was taken to the Prison of the Damned to be tortured so as to force him renew his allegiance to Ares. Kratos remained a prisoner of the Furies for three weeks until he managed to free himself, due to the recklessness of Megaera, one of the Furies.

This would result in a chase throughout the prison until stopping at the entrance to Alecto's Chamber. Megaera resorted to using her parasites to infect and mutate several of Aegaeon's arms and eventually Aegaeon's head into attacking Kratos. They failed to kill him, however, and a majority of the upper parts of the prison were destroyed in the process. Following Megaera and Aegaeon's death, a majority of the Prison of the Damned were destroyed, though they were restored by Kratos via the Amulet of Uroborus.

When he entered Alecto's chamber, Tisiphone, another of the Furies, conjures an illusion where he is back at home with his wife Lysandra and their daughter Calliope, however, Kratos saw through the illusion, and would engage in battle with Tisiphone and the Fury Queen Alecto, ultimately killing them individually. Alecto's death destroyed the entirety of the Prison of the Damned, leaving it no more.
