This article contains lore based on real-life sources from Norse mythology as introduced from the God of War Norse era.
Otr is one of the three dragons captured by the Dwarf King Mótsognir.
In Norse Mythology[]
Ótr (alternately: Ott, Oter, Otr, Ottar, Ottarr, Otter) is a dwarf. He is the son of the king Hredimir and the brother of Fafnir and Regin.
According to the Prose Edda, he could change into any form, and used to spend his days in the shape of an otter, greedily eating fish. Ótr was slain accidentally by Loki, who wanted to keep his pelt. Hreidmar demanded a large weregild for Ótr's death, namely to fill Ótr's skin with yellow gold, and to then cover it entirely with red gold. When the skin was covered, one whisker was still protruding, forcing Loki to give up the ring Andvarinaut to hide it. The ring had been stolen from, and cursed by, the fish-dwarf Andvari. It is suggested that this story was meant to show the benefits of not only adhering to the letter of the law (repayment for manslaughter) but sticking to the spirit of the law as well (demanding an exorbitant ransom). Greed for this cursed treasure ultimately caused the deaths of Hreidmar and his two surviving sons: Hreidmar was killed by Fafnir, who transformed into a dragon, and the other two were slain by Sigurd's sword Gram.
God of War (2018)[]
Otr, at some point, was captured and chained on the orders of the Dwarf King Mótsognir. However, the dragon would then successfully escape and sought revenge on his captors as well as wanting to burn down Veithurgard. He was eventually captured again and was chained to a magical anchor which can only be disabled if three runes, which were engraved into it, are destroyed.
When Kratos and Atreus arrived in Veithurgard, they have the choice to set Our free while exploring the region. The duo eventually disables the chain's anchor and sets the dragon free, who proceeded to thank the duo for freeing him before flying away to parts unknown.
Trivia[]
- A dwarf named Otr was known by Laufey and she told his story to his son Atreus. However, it is not known if Otr the dragon and Otr the dwarf are the same being.
- Otr is the only one of the three sons of Hreidmar who doesn't turn into a dragon in any iteration of Sigurd's story.
