The Oracle of Athens was one of the many inhabitants of Athens, and assisted Kratos in his quest to defeat Ares.

Greek History

At the ancient Greek city of Delphi, there was a priestess known as the Pythia, who lived at the Delphic Oracle, a site where prophecies from the gods were received by mortals. Many people would consult her for various information, though her predictions were almost always vague about its true nature. Often the temples would be constructed in a manner that a second person would hide in hidden area beneath the oracle herself, therefore lending his voice as "the voice of the Gods" during the recital of prophecies.

In God of War

In God of War, the city of Athens has their own Oracle. She first appears in front of Kratos as an hologram, telling him to go to her Temple, as she will help him to defeat Ares. However, when Kratos arrives there, she is attacked by Harpies, that carry her to the Temple' courtyard, and drop her, letting her hang from a rope. After Kratos successfully saves her from falling to her death, she looks into his mind to see the man he truly is. Having seen Kratos' past, and the man he truly was, she was horrified by the truth of who Kratos was and could not believe that Athena sent him to save the city. She helps Kratos nonetheless, telling him he must obtain Pandora's Box if he were to kill Ares, and opening the path to the Desert of Lost Souls.

Upon returning to Athens from the Underworld, Kratos soon finds the temple destroyed and the Oracle mortally wounded. Upon seeing Kratos, she reaches out for him and tells him that Ares had taken the city. Kratos then walked past her, to face and defeat Ares. It is possibly that she survived the events of Athens and the chaos, a vase in Tyr's Temple shows Greece rebuilding.

Powers and Abilities

Being the Oracle of Athens, she had the power to look into a person's mind and see their true self. The gift of sight and wisdom might have been granted upon her by her patron goddess Athena.

Trivia

  • The cinematic cutscenes portray the Oracle sporting red hair, but during gameplay the Oracle has dark brown hair. Her clothes are different as well: during gameplay there are green while in the cinematic cutscenes are more white-blue.
  • If Kratos falls to the ground while climbing to save the Oracle, she will automatically fall to her death.
  • She is voiced by Susanne Blakeslee, the same woman who voices the Village Oracle and later Gaia in God of War III.
