Nokken

The Nokken are malicious water sprites native to Vanaheim, and are known for their high intelligence and their chilling song.

Norse Mythology[]

The Nixie, Nixy, Nix, Näcken, Nicor, Nøkk, or Nøkken (German: Nixe; Dutch: nikker, nekker; Danish: nøkke; Norwegian Bokmål: nøkk; Nynorsk: nykk; Swedish: näck; Faroese: nykur; Finnish: näkki; Icelandic: nykur; Estonian: näkk; Old English: nicor; English: neck or nicker) are humanoid, and often shapeshifting water spirits in Germanic mythology and folklore.

The Nordic näcken, näkki, nøkk were male water spirits who played enchanted songs on the violin, luring women and children to drown in lakes or streams. However, not all of these spirits were necessarily malevolent; many stories indicate at the very least that nøkker were entirely harmless to their audience and attracted not only women and children, but men as well with their sweet songs. Stories also exist wherein the Fossegrim agreed to live with a human who had fallen in love with him, but many of these stories ended with the nøkk returning to his home, usually a nearby waterfall or brook. (Compare the legend of Llyn y Fan Fach in Wales.) The nøkker were said to grow despondent unless they had free, regular contact with a water source.

Appearance[]

Nokken are goblin-like creatures of short stature, with spindly limbs and an emaciated build. Their faces are human seeming and usually scowling or wickedly grinning. Beneath heavy brows, their eyes are beady points of light and thin dark hair hangs down their necks. Befitting their watery nature, piscine scales cover their bodies and waterweed-like growths crown their scalps and adorn their shoulders and arms.

Powers and Abilities[]

Magical Singing: The Nokken possess the ability to sing a chilling magical song which grants lesser warriors empowering abilities such as increased stamina and the ability to give health.
Sonic Shout: The Nokken can release a thunderous scream which can temporarily remove vision.
