Nal, along with her husband Bergelmir are the founder of Jötunheim and she is a character featured in God of War (2018).

Norse Mythology[]

Nal was the frost giant granddaughter of Ymir, the first frost giant, who along with her husband were the only giant survivors of the enormous deluge of blood which flowed from Ymir's wounds when he was killed by Odin and his brothers Vili and . According to the Gylfaginning, the two escaped the flood of blood and subsequently became the progenitors of a new race of frost giants.

Biography[]

Nal and Bergelmir were the sole survivors of the Giants following the devastating flood caused by Ymir's blood pouring out of him. The two had stayed afloat in the hollowed husk of a tree.

They sailed for weeks until they found new land. Bergelmir called it "Jötunheim", a realm where the Giants served no master but themselves. She and Bergelmir started to proceeded and repopulate their race and ruled benevolently over the Giants as King and Queen.

She along with Bergelmir never sought vengeance against Odin for the murder of Ymir or the near-extinction of their race and chose to prosper with her husband instead. She likely died of old age like her husband, surrounded by people who loved her and Bergelmir.

Trivia[]

  • In the mythology, Laufey had an alternate name, Nal, however in the God of War universe Nal is a separated character who was the wife of Bergelmir.
