The Manticore

The Manticore is mythological Persian beast and a mini-boss in God of War: Ascension.

Mythology

The Manticore (Early middle Persian) is a Persian legandary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth similar to a shark, and a trumpet-like voice.  Other ascpects of the creature cary from story to story. It may be horned winged or both. The tail is either a dragon's or a scorpion's, and it may shoot poisonous spines to paralyze or kill it's prey. It devours its prey whole and leaves nothing behind.

In the God of War Series

Manticore

The Manticore is a flying sub-boss presented with lion-like face, the jaw of a shark, which can become unhinged, dragon wings, human arms and torso, a scorpion tail and insect-like plates, lining its back. Kratos kills the large Manticore by chopping off various limbs and parts in particular stages. The Manticore spits out eggs, releasing hatchlings. Two are encountered, in Delphi and Delos.

Manticore Hatchlings

Small Manticores hatch out of eggs, they are moderately weak but strong in numbers. Their attack style is similar to Harpies, except they breathe fire.

Trivia

  • It should be noted that the Manticore does not have arms that are separate to its wings in the God of War universe, this is different to the one in actual mythology as that had a lion body complete with four legs.
  • In the earlier versions of the Manticore's design, the beast had hair as well as spines, this idea was scrapped as one of the developers thought that it made no sense for the Manticore to only have hair in one place.
  • If manticore hatchling eggs are left undestroyed, Feral Hounds will also spawn from some of them.
