Mani (Old Norse: Máni) also known as Mani Mundilfœrison (Translation: Mani, Son of Mundilfœri) and "The Moon " is the God of the moon and brother to the sun Goddess Sol. He and his sister are destined to die at the jaws of Sköll and Hati in the beginning of Ragnarök.

Norse Mythology[]

Máni (Old Norse: [ˈmɑːne]; "Moon") is the Moon personified in Germanic mythology. Máni, personified, is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Both sources state that he is the brother of the personified sun, Sól, and the son of Mundilfari, while the Prose Edda adds that he is followed by the children Hjúki and Bil through the heavens. As a proper noun, Máni appears throughout Old Norse literature. Scholars have proposed theories about Máni's potential connection to the Northern European notion of the Man in the Moon, and a potentially otherwise unattested story regarding Máni through skaldic kennings.

In the God of War Series[]

God of War (2018)[]

Mimir mentioned that he and his sister, Sol, became mutinous and refused to move in the sky. Odin hurled Sköll and Hati using his powerful magic to force the sibling gods to move around the sky, lest the wolves would devour them whole.

God of War Ragnarök[]

In God of War Ragnarök, although Mani does not appear, the Moon is still kidnapped making Hati and Sköll have nothing to chase, it can be assumed that Mani was attacked and so Heimdall and the Einherjar can kidnap the Moon.

But after Atreus freed the Moon, an eclipse was created and Sköll and Hati went back to chasing the Sun and Moon.

Powers & Abilities[]

Being the personification of the Moon itself, Mani is extremely powerful and probably possesses abilities that reflect this. It's possible that his powers mirror that of the Greek goddess Selene.

  • Superhuman Strength: As a god Mani must have tremendous superhuman strength, however it's unknown if he's at the same level as Aesir Gods like Odin, Thor, Týr, and Baldur but it's certain that he's weaker than his chaser Hati as the latter proved to pose enough threat for him to run for his life.
  • Photokinesis: Being the personification of the moon it's presumed that Mani is capable of manipulating the moonlight according to his will.
  • Telekinesis: It is not clear if it is an ability of his, but it is assumed that Mani was the one who made the Moon return to its place in the Sky.
  • Immortality: Typical of a god, he's immortal and have lived for millennia up until Hati eventually able to reach and devour him in the beginning of Ragnarök.

Trivia[]

  • His Greek equivalent is Selene, both are the personifications of the moon itself.
  • It can be assumed from Mimir's tale that Mani holds no loyalty to the Raven King, Odin.
  • Mani has a female form in Norse Mythology, in that form he goes by Moona, Luna, and Selene.
