The Walls of Asgard are the walls that protected Asgard from many threats, mainly from Giants. It was here that Atreus, a.k.a Loki, decided to ascend to reach the city of Asgard to find Odin, but ended up meeting Asgard's protector, Heimdall.

Norse Mythology[]

When the hall of Valhalla was built, a builder with his stallion Svaðilfari, arrived. He offered to build the Gods a high fortification around their home so that invaders will be kept out. In exchange, he asks for the Vanir Goddess Freyja, along with the sun and moon. While Freyja rejects this, Odin and the other Gods agreed, but they placed numerous restrictions on the builder: he had to complete the job in one season and should accomplish without getting assistance from any man. When the builder asked if he could let Svaðilfari help him on the job, the trickster God Loki influenced the gods to allow this.

As the builder and Svaðilfari were doing about their work, the gods, overtime, grew distressed and were surprised when Svaðilfari performed twice the builder's deeds of strength by hauling enormous stones. Both the builder and his stallion, made fast progress on the wall in no time, and three days before the deadline, which is in summer, they're almost at the entrance. Seeing this, the Gods fearfully gathered and knew that Loki was to blame for allowing the builder to use Svaðilfari. The gods threatened Loki that they'll give him several punishments if he didn't come up with a way to prevent the builder from finishing the job. In fear, Loki swore to come up with a scheme that would make the builder forfeit his payment no matter the cost.

That night, as the builder and Svaðilfari went out to fetch more stone, Loki, in the guise of a mare, came out of the woods and neighed at Svaðilfari, causing the stallion to become frantic. He tore apart his harness and began chasing after the mare, who ran into the woods, with the builder close behind. As the three tore through the woods, this caused the work to be put on hold throughout the rest of the night. Knowing that he could not finish the job on time, the builder went into a rage, and he revealed himself as a giant before the gods. Seeing the builder's true form, they immediately disregard their oaths and called upon Thor, who immediately arrived, and the God of Thunder. kills the builder with his hammer Mjölnir.

Description[]

After his father Thamur was killed by Thor, his son Hrimthur sought revenge. Even though he wanted to fight Thor himself, however, the tragic death of his father brought more wisdom onto him, causing him to become more clever and cunning. Having observed that the walls of Asgard were unfinished and poorly-made, as the Aesir despise hard labor, Hrimthur disguised himself as a normal human and entered a bet with Odin: he would improve the walls of Asgard within an impossibly short period of time and would earn nothing if he fails. But if he is able to finish the labor, he wants an audience with the Vanir Goddess Freya.

During the construction of the walls of Asgard, Hrimthur got the aid of a magic stallion, who would fetch him stones. Odin ended up losing the bet, much to his anger, but he still kept his word and allowed Hrimthur to speak Freya. Upon meeting the goddess herself, he whispers something in her ear. As he was leaving Asgard, he found Thor awaiting him at the gates of Asgard, having been sent by Odin to kill him after discovering Hrimthur's true nature as a Jötunn. According to Freya, Hrimthur had placed a weakness in the walls, right behind the Asgard realm tower, for the preparation for Ragnarök, in which Surtr would exploit that weakness and burn down Asgard. However, Freya later reveals to Kratos and Atreus that what she had told them earlier was wrong as since Ragnarök himself is not present in Asgard, then they have to breach the walls themselves.
