–Heimdall's last words |
The death of Heimdall, the watchman of the Aesir, was a major pivotal event in the God of War franchise, it resulted in Heimdall's death at the hands of a rage-fueled Kratos, which allowed the latter possessed Gjallarhorn to herald Ragnarök, though he was left shaken by what he had done, after realizing too late that he had lost control of himself.
Heimdall's brutal but unexpected death would prove to have tremendous consequences on the Nine Realms, as it completely defied the prophecy that was foreseen by the Nornir and this gave his enemies the key to their final victory over the Aesir. Heimdall's demise deprived Asgard from one of its most valuable assets, as the Bearer of Gjallarhorn was supposed to fulfill his destiny by the time Ragnarök comes. Instead, as a result of his death, it would be Kratos who would blow into Gjallarhorn, thus bringing forth the doom of Asgard sooner than expected.
Norse Mythology[]
Heimdall's death during Ragnarök is a major event where Heimdall and Loki were destined to slay each other during the cataclysm, as the two are known to be enemies with each other.
Impact[]
Upon Heimdall's death and the retrieval of Gjallarhorn, Kratos and his allies began making preparations for Ragnarök while Atreus returns to Asgard with the intention of completing and stealing Odin's mask, in the hopes of potentially using it against the Asgardians in the coming war. At some point, Heimdall's corpse was found by his nephew Forseti who proceeded to uncover evidence that Kratos is responsible for his uncle's death. Seeking out Sif, he presented the evidence that he had found and gathered.
Consequently, as a result, Kratos' killing of Heimdall fueled Sif's hatred for both the Spartan and Atreus. As an insult to injury, it was also a trigger for Thor to wallow in booze again, which shamed his daughter Thrúd. With the evidence that Forseti had uncovered, Sif travelled to Niflheim with the Valkyries Hrist and Mist to arrest Atreus for his father's actions, though Odin prevented them from doing that, which only worsened the situation, as Sif became more concerned over Thrúd's safety, causing Thor to vent his anger out on Atreus before the latter narrowly escapes with the Mask.
With it in their possession, Kratos, Atreus, and their allies gathered to discuss their next plan of action. Týr, who noticeably had a change of heart, pledged to aid the group in the coming war and reveals he knew of a secret way into Asgard.
Overseeing this, Brok immediately became suspicious, systematically picking apart every flaw in the latter's story (most notably, him supposedly knowing a way into Asgard, and his referring to Atreus as Loki). "Týr" then responds by stabbing Brok in the chest, before revealing himself to be Odin. During this point, Odin insists that if Brok dies, that makes them square for Heimdall.
