Dagr mentioning his father

Högni was a king of Östergötland, father of Sigrún and Dagr who appears in sources of Norse mythology.

Norse Mythology[]

King Högni was in the Volsunga saga, the king Granmar also appears, and in this saga, Högni has the sons Bragi and Dag, and a daughter Sigrún who he had promised to Granmar's son Hothbrodd. However, Sigrún has a suitor, Helgi Hundingsbane who attacks Granmar. Helgi kills both Högni, Bragi, Dag and Granmar's sons Hothbrodd, Gudmund and Starkad.

Högni's daughter, Sigrún falls in love with Helgi, she tells Helgi that her father Högni has promised her to Höðbroddr, the son of king Granmarr. Helgi invades Granmar's kingdom and slays anyone opposing their relationship including Sigrún's father Högni. Only Sigrún's brother, Dag, is left alive on condition that he swears fealty to Helgi.

In the Heimskringla saga Snorri Sturluson wrote that he was the king of Östergötland and that he had a son named Hildur and daughter Hilda who was married to Granmar, the king of Södermanland. When Ingjald Ill-ruler murdered most of the sub-kings of Sweden, Högni and Granmar successfully defended their kingdoms. Snorri states that Högni and his son Hildur often made raids into the Swedish provinces killing many of Ingjald's men, and that he ruled his kingdom until he died.

God of War Ragnarök[]

King Högni in God of War was the ruler of the Midgardian kingdom of Fjöturlund where he raised his daughter Princess Sigrún and his son Prince Dagr. In his daughters youth, a king named Helgi offered his hand to her in marriage. However, King Högni, who knew of Helgi's true nature, refused to let him marry his daughter. Taking this as a slight, Helgi angrily responded by invading Fjöturlund in an attempt to claim Sigrún by force. On the mad king's orders, his soldiers sacked the kingdom and killed anyone who would dare oppose Helgi's supposed union. During the sacking, most of Sigrún's family, including her parents, were killed leaving only her brother Prince Dagr.

In King Högni's attempts at shielding his daughter Princess Sigrún from the mad king's true nature he, along with his kingdom lost their lives.
