The gods care nothing for them. Men should not pray to monsters.

–Kratos to Atreus

Gods are a race of powerful, ageless beings that are commonly worshiped by mortal inhabitants of certain realms. There are several, distinct pantheons of gods, such as the Greek Olympians or the Norse Aesir and Vanir pantheons. Every god in a pantheon fills a certain role, such as the God of War or the God of Light.

Oftentimes, each God has a counterpart in other pantheons. For instance, Týr is the Aesir God of War in the Norse pantheon. However, in the Greek pantheon, the God of War was Ares, who was later replaced by Kratos after his death.  According to Kratos, the gods care nothing for their worshipers. Worshiping them is foolish and men should not pray to monsters, however, Tyr is shown to greatly care about mortals.

Despite claiming to be immortal, Gods can be killed, usually only be another god or someone wielding a godly weapon, such as the Blade of Olympus. The Greek Pantheon was completely wiped out during Kratos' quest for revenge. Rarely, a mortal can ascend to Godhood after a God is killed and their place in their respective pantheon is available.

Trivia

  • It is shown in God of War (2018) that various other pantheons exist such as the Egyptian, Japanese, Mayan and Celtic ones. In God of War: Chains of Olympus, various monsters from Arabic mythology appear, suggesting the Arabic pantheon exists as well. God of War's animation director Bruno Velazquez even gave an implication of the Christian God existing, despite being of monotheistic religion.
