Biography[]

Durinn, known as the "Generous" during his lifetime, foresaw the future of Svartalfheim, seeing the realm as being independent from the rule of the Aesir, with its lands being as lush and verdant as Vanaheim. Seeking to fulfill his vision of independence, he built a magnificent device called the World-Mill over the course of decades. He would use his creation to sell high-quality and fertile soil to other Dwarves and use his earnings to keep the machine running. He was on the verge of making his vision come true when Odin heard of the World-Mill. Refusing to allow the machine to grant the Dwarves independence, the All-father attempted to bribe Durinn with gold in exchange for the World-Mill's destruction.

Durinn refused, however, and the Aesir decided to foil the Dwarf's goals by constructing their own World-Mill and offered the Dwarves their own soil by selling them at prices that Durinn himself could not match. Because his people are now buying fertile soil from the Aesir instead of him, Durinn is unable to continue affording to keep his World-Mill running and the machine would consequently fall into disrepair as a result. As Asgard had only built their World-Mill to thwart Durinn's attempt to achieve independence for Svartalfheim, Odin has his own World-Mill destroyed once he has accomplished his objective. With his vision for his home-realm crushed, Durinn committed suicide over his failure.

Norse Mythology[]

In Norse mythology, Durinn (Old Norse: [ˈdurenː]; or Durin) is a dwarf according to stanza 10 of the poem Völuspá from the Poetic Edda, and repeated in Gylfaginning from the Prose Edda. He was the second created after the first and foremost dwarf Mótsognir.

He is also attested in Hervarar saga, where he forged the magic sword Tyrfing with the help of the dwarf Dvalin. In variant texts of the saga Durinn is known as Dulinn.
