Template:Infobox gods Demeter is the Greek Goddess of harvest and plants and the mother of Persephone.

Greek Mythology

In Greek mythology, Demeter was the Olympian goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread, the prime sustenance of mankind. She also presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults which promised its initiates the path to a blessed afterlife. Demeter was depicted as a mature woman, often crowned and holding sheafs of wheat and a torch.

Her Roman counterpart is Ceres.

God of War series

Although Demeter does not appear in any of the God of War games, she was mentioned in God of War: Chains of Olympus, when Kratos was reading the story of Persephone within the Temple of Persephone. It is strange that she made no appearance at all, not even to avenge her daughter's death. Still, Persephone was trying to bring about the end of the world (including her own mother by extension), and knowing this, Demeter may have chose not to bear any grudge against Kratos. Moreover, Demeter was a very peaceful Goddess. In God of War III, though not making an appearance, her powers were possessed by her sister Hera. After Hera was killed, all the plants on Olympus and presumably on Earth withered so it is possible that Demeter was killed in the process with Hera.

Trivia

  • In Greek mythology, Demeter went to the all-seeing Helios, and asked him of her daughter's whereabouts, during which he revealed to her that Hades had taken her causing Demeter to bear an immense hatred at Hades.
  • Her Roman name, Ceres, is where the name "Cereal" came from.
