Daudi Vörðr (meaning Death Warden or Death Watcher) was a Troll that appears as a minor enemy in God of War Ragnarök. Like Dauði Kaupmaðr from the previous game, Daudi Vörðr is the first fire troll to be encountered in the main storyline.
Norse Mythology[]
While no such Troll with that name exists, the last name Vörðr is the name of a species of warden spirits that are believed to follow the soul of a person from their birth to their death.
God of War Ragnarök[]
After a fight against a swarm of Grims and Atreus accidentally destroys the break of the train that he and Kratos were riding in, this caused it to derail and the train began to plunge to the ground. It soon fell upon Daudi Vörðr, a troll that had happened to be standing underneath the falling train at the time. This broke Kratos and Atreus' fall, at the expense of dealing several wounds to Daudi Vörðr. Kratos breaks out, and unaware of the troll behind him, attempted to help Atreus out of the train.
Daudi Vörðr, enraged at its injuries, grabbed Kratos and lifted him up. However, Kratos was able to use the Leviathan Axe to sever one of the troll's tusks. In shock, Daudi Vörðr dropped Kratos, inadvertenly allowing the Spartan to strike it's neck several times with his axe, eventually decapitating the troll. Kratos attributed this in his journal as a merciful killing for the troll, which is done as gratitude for breaking their fall.
Trivia[]
- Daudi Vörðr has the same appearance as Dauði Kaupmaðr from God of War (2018) and, similarly, is the first Troll encountered in the game's main storyline.
- However, whereas Kaupmaðr is the first boss of the previous game, Vörðr is killed during a cutscene.
- This is likely an in-joke by the developers regarding the popular criticism of the previous game having too many Trolls.
- However, whereas Kaupmaðr is the first boss of the previous game, Vörðr is killed during a cutscene.
- Daudi Vörðr is the first and only troll to ever be seen without a totem.
- He is one of the few trolls whose name starts with the word Dauði or Daudi, which means "Death".
- Daudi Vörðr's finisher animation is unique compared to other Trolls, having his head chopped off rather than being crushed by his own totem.
