The Crypt is a place in the depths of Tartarus where apparently corpses are kept. It is also "watched over" by the skeletal remains of a man who sits on a throne-like seat above (The Jailer of Tartarus). As Kratos makes his way through the Crypt, he finds the Cryptkeeper's Key, which then allows him to access the Temple of Zeus.
