Coeus is a minor character in the God of War novelization.

God of War[]

Coeus was one of the captured slaves on the Boat Captains slave ship "The God's Lament". The Captain was on the run across the sea for several days from the legendary Ghost of Sparta, after seeing him during an attempted trade for fresh water that the Spartan and his crew badly needed. Kratos skillfully directed the slave ship into the Grave of Ships, where no vessel has ever escaped. The Boat Captain has met his end in the acid of the Hydra's stomach at the hands of Kratos, who obtained his Key and now claimed the ship and its surviving crew.

All the slaves, still locked inside their cages were terrified to the core when the Ghost of Sparta stood infront of them. The towering Champion of the Gods promised them freedom if they man the ship, so that they all may escape these cursed waters. Only Coeus had the courage to speak up, with Kratos giving him his word that they will be free, which satisfied the man who encouraged the rest of the slaves to join him in Kratos crew. Coeus noted that a storm was brewing, which the Spartan has noticed aswell and made him his First Officer.

With hard work of the crew, the guidance of Kratos and Coeus, aswell as divine favour and protection of the Goddess Athena, the ship was able to do the impossible and escape the treacherous cross-currents and floating shipwrecks in the Grave of Ships and sail out into the open sea. The weather was hard, but Athena protected the vessel from the worst of it and send rays of light onto the nightsky, as a sign of her support. Once, Kratos had fallen on the floor after a harsh wave hit the ship, but Coeus was quick to take action and caught his Captain, helping him. The Ghost of Sparta silently thanked Lady Athena for sending him a tried and true sailor.

On the entire last day on the way to Athens, the crew could behold the black and thick clouds in the direction of the great city, an dark omen for the horrors that the God of War and his monstrous armies are unleashing on it. True to his word and in no real need of the crew and ship anymore, Kratos has left the slaves to their freedom as they reached the Docks of Athens, with Coeus being the new Captain and sailing back into the sea. The Ghost of Sparta watched as they departed and found it a waste, as they may have missed the chance to leave the living world with an honourable warrior's death, for if he fails to complete his quest there is no place on Earth where his former master Ares will not find them.
