It is through my threads that all life is born. You must not tamper with destiny, Kratos. You will destroy everything.

–Clotho.

Clotho (Greek: Κλωθώ) is one of the three Primordial Sisters of Fate, the youngest sister and the spinner of the threads as she is the one who begins life and decides who will be born and when. She is the last of the sisters to be defeated and the only one to be physically killed by Kratos, when he invades the Palace of the Fates to use the loom and change his fate.

Greek Mythology[]

In Greek mythology, Clotho was the youngest of the three sisters and the spinner of the Threads of Fate often referred to as the Threads of Life. She is often depicted as a young maiden. In Roman Mythology, her name is Nona.

Biography[]

Birth and Early Days[]

Chaos created the Island of Creation and together with the island, she was born from Nyx and Erebus as some of the first creatures of the world.

Later, the Titans left the island and forged the rest of the world. She along with her sisters became the rulers of Island of Creation. Reigning over Greece, the mighty Cronos learned from his mother Gaia that one day he would be overthrown by his own children. In an attempt to gain their favor, Cronos gifted Clotho and her older sisters with the Steeds of Time. Unfortunately, Clotho refused to change his fate and took the steeds anyway, showing that she would not obey the rule over a "lesser creature".

She along with Lahkesis and Atropos allowed the Gods to win the Titan War. After the Gods won the battled she along with her sisters were given status as Goddesses and were allies with Zeus later she would accept Olympians orders who would decide the fate and the future but later she choosed to decide overs fates of Mortals, Gods and Titans herself as she didn't want anyone to middle with her powers so she kept everything in order deciding every fates.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta[]

Clotho found amusing Kratos in some capacity and she deemed Kratos victorious on his quest to save his brother. Later Thanatos mentions that he would change this encounter to prevent Kratos from meeting his brother. Clotho along with her sisters Atropos and Lahkesis helps Kratos win his fight against Thanatos in Domain of Death.

God of War II[]

Later Zeus betrayed Kratos and killed him using the Blade so Zeus came to Clotho and her sisters because of his paranoia involving Kratos's brutality but Clotho told Zeus that Kratos was the son that was destined to overthrow him but that Zeus would be the victor in the end. Then he left Clotho, Atropos and Lahkesis. She continued on with her normal duties watching over the Island and the threads. Later she felt Kratos coming to the Island and to change his fate so she warned her sisters.

After battling Lahkesis and Atropos by trapping them in a mirror which she sensed. Clotho was feeling Kratos coming closer to her and he finds Clotho resides deep within the Loom Chamber of the Temple of the Fates. Clotho, who warns him to turn back, and not to tamper with the threads of life. She tells him that it is through her threads which she makes all life is born. Clotho tells Kratos that he will destroy everything. Kratos defies Clotho in order to complete his goal and she summoned her minions, such as cyclops, minotaurs, sirens and gorgons to fight at her side but Kratos managed to survive. She again tells him when he defeats her minions that he will never to able to control his fate and it was not his destiny to kill Zeus. She tells Kratos that he is not meant to tavel through Mirrors of Destiny that he is meddling with powers he does not understand and it will destroy everything.

Kratos ignores her warnings but she tries to stop him but Kratos manages to go to the middle floor. She again tries to tell him that this power was never meant for mortal hands eventually she takes matters into her own hands and begins to take out Kratos through every section. While she attempted to hold him off with her many arms but Kratos subdued her arms.

Having enough with Kratos ignorance she waited for him to come to face her at the top floor. Kratos went to the top and came to face to face with Clotho. Angered at Kratos for tapping her sisters in the mirror and not obeying her warnings. She comforted and told him that he will never control his thread. She attacks him and does heavy damage to Kratos but he managed to disable her arms and ultimately, she met her demise when Kratos impaled her skull with a large, swinging, blade-like pendulum from her own apparatus.

When Kratos was using his thread to travel back in time. Clotho's disembodied voice taunted Kratos, saying that he would never find his own thread.

God of War III[]

She along with her sisters appears in the beginning comforting Kratos. Later when Kratos faces Zeus he tells him that the Sisters of Fate can't control him.

Personality[]

Due to being the "creator of life", Clotho is proud of her status as a sister of fate and is always trying to keep everything in order, unlike her sisters who are always playing with the fate of mortals and gods alike. Clotho does seem to admire Kratos, and along with her sisters finds him amusing in some capacity. Unlike her sisters however, she was willing to gave Kratos a chance to redeem himself by turning back, warning him of the grave consequences his actions would cause not just for himself, but for all of existence.

Clotho does show concern over some matters such as about changing certain events knowing that it's consequences will be bad or good. She sees Titans as lesser beings due to her strong powers and she willing allowed the Gods to win despite Cronos pleas.

She cared about her family especially her older sisters Atropos and Lahkesis as she tried to fix the mirrors to free them. She dosen't likes it when someone disobeys her orders. She will take action if pushed to a certain limit. She dosen't cares much about results she only looks to choices as she willing allowed Kratos to win his fight against her brother Thanatos. She will desposed of anything that is a threat to Olympus and her power. She takes her work seriously and tries to follow and decide her own choices about choosin fates whatout listening to others.

Appearance[]

Clotho is the largest of the Sisters of Fate. Unlike her generally humanoid sisters, she resembles a giant silkworm with disgusting scaly flabby skin and two sets of arms and breasts. She also has long white hair, on which she wears a crown with blue silver on it.

Powers and Abilities[]

As one of the Sisters of Fate, Clotho was more powerful than the Gods, than the Titans, than anyone in the mythological world and possessed a certain amount of powerful abilities.

  • Superhuman Durability: As a god, she was able to stand on her own against Kratos and deal with massive damage.
  • Superhuman Stamina: As a god, she required no sleep or even rest.
  • Superhuman Strength: As a god, she was powerful enough to hurt Kratos and do massive damage.
  • Immortality: As a god, she was immortal, meaning that she was immune to disease and couldn't age.
  • Destiny Manipulation: Like her sister Atropos, she was also able to make and alter destiny.

Trivia[]

  • She is by far the largest of the Sisters of Fate, as well as the youngest. Ironically, Clotho is quite ugly compared to most depictions of her in mythology.
  • After she is killed her consciousness seems to have survived, as her disembodied voice can be heard taunting Kratos, saying that he would never find his own thread.
  • Despite being – presumably – capable to control time, Clotho only attacks Kratos by hitting him with her arms; she isn't even able to create balls of energy, like her sisters. Also, ironically, Kratos can use time control against her, since he can activate the Amulet of the Fates to slow down time, thereby slowing Clotho's movements.
  • For some reason, Clotho never uses any time-related abilities, unlike her sisters. All she ever uses is her multiple arms in combat.
  • Since Clotho is the Greek Goddess of the Past, and she creates the Treads of Fate, it'd make sense that her design is based on a silkworm.
  • Clotho is the only one of the three Sisters of Fate to be dead considering Lahkesis and Atropos are still alive, but trapped in the past. This is assuming that Kratos shattering the mirror containing them did not wipe them from existence entirely.
