In the God of War Series[]
Backstory[]
Byggvir was a Light Elf from Alfheim, and took part in the never-ending war effort against the Dark Elves over control of the Light. At some point, he tried to uncover restricted information on the history of the Elves in an attempt to promote peace between the two sides, and was imprisoned along with Beyla, a Dark Elf warrior. During their time in prison, they grew close to each other, becoming lovers by the time they escaped, and eventually left Alfheim to join Freyr’s resistance group as the Alfheim war showed no signs of ending.
God of War Ragnarök[]
Byggvir is first seen shorty after Kratos, Freya and Mimir arrive in Vanaheim. He is a member of Freyr's resistance alongside Byggvir, Lúnda, and Birgir, all of whom ambush and surround Kratos when he first enters Freyr's encampment, only standing down when Freyr orders them to. After Kratos and Freya reconcile and return to Freyr's camp, Beyla and Byggvir ask Kratos to acquire a book from a restricted library in Alfheim's Forbidden Sands, believing that it holds taboo information on the history of the Light and Dark Elves, and that it may be a first step in promoting peace between the two sides. They both thank Kratos once he returns with the book.
Byggvir is later captured by Heimdall and his Einhenjar forces, but manages to escape, using the eclipse created by Kratos and Atreus once they return the moon to Sköll and Hati as a distraction. Both Beyla and Byggvir are later seen aiding Freyr's rescue alongside Kratos, Freya and Atreus. Once safely returned, Beyla asks Byggvir to promise to not let himself get captured again.
The two are present at Tyr's Temple the night before Kratos' attack on Asgard, and are also present in the Realm Travel room during Kratos' final speech. During the battle, they are seen coming to Kratos' aid once he signals for them to regroup, and he orders them to help the Midgardian refugees get to safety. They are last seen resting with the survivors in Hoddmimis Holt, where they share their fond memories of Freyr. They raise a drink to Atreus and Kratos once they pass.
Appearance[]
Byggvir has a pale, grayish-white complexion overlaid with intricate, flowing, light-blue markings that follow the contours of his face. He has intricate, almost anatomical, details in his attire. His headpiece is a circlet or headband with curved, almost linen-like material, which gives the effect of bandages or a headdress, and it forms a sort of halo/crown shape around his head, from behind there is a muted blue fabric hanging from it. His clothing appears to be mystical garb that is in a layered, almost wraparound style made of bandages or fabric, it is white in color. His clothes appear somewhat tattered, flowing like a robe. Strips of light bluish-gray fabric are wrapped around his waist. A light beige/tan wide belt is around his waist. A few rectangular pouches are visible on the belt. Brown rope-like material is used as accents or ties at his shoulders. He has intricate designs, like patterns and straps, woven into his attire. Accents of darker colors, suggest details such as bindings, jewelry, and possibly metallic components. His facial features are somewhat angular, but with gentle curves rather than harsh lines. His eyes are a striking light, almost electric blue, but have a piercing white color. He wears a decorative, colorful necklace with small, jewel-like pendants of varying colors, including teal/turquoise, orangey-red/peach and amber/gold tones.
Personality[]
Byggvir is friendly and chatty, unlike his stoic wife. If the player approaches Byggvir before breaking Freya's curse, he politely greets Kratos, despite Kratos barely being an acquaintance and having been an enemy moments before, prompting Beyla to tell off Byggvir for saying hello. After breaking Freya's curse, Beyla and Byggvir accept him as an ally, and Byggvir asks Kratos to acquire a book from a restricted Elven library from the Forbidden Sands, believing that it holds taboo information on the history of the Elves which may help promote peace between the two sides. Like Beyla, Byggvir is critical of his race and the constant war for the light, believing that the more time he spends away from the light without wanting for its aura, the more he realises that it’s something he should no longer crave or blindly fight for anymore.
