Brok's hammer is the primary tool we see him use for creating weapons and fighting.
In the God of War Series[]
Brok's hammer was likely created for simply crafting weapons and self defense (as he's seen using it for both anyways). You can see Brok battle various creatures using his hammer and various other items like his brother Sindri. Brok's hammer was also designed to crack open hazelnuts using the handle. Sometime after Brok's death, Sindri can be seen using Brok's hammer to craft a sword and to kill various enemies.
Brok's hammer was also the hammer used to crush Odin's soul, the one who was wielding it during that time was Sindri.
