Astrid: Freya... you return.

Freya: Astrid... What happened to you? To your garden?

Astrid: The Einherjar. My life's work, rotted. My monument to your glory, reduced to this. I am sorry, my queen.

–Astrid and Freya

Astrid was a female Vanir worshiper of the Goddess Freya, she was the caretaker and creator of Noatun's Garden. Her goal was to keep the plants in bloom until her Queen would one day return to her rightful home, Vanaheim.

God of War: Ragnarök[]

Not much is actually known about the female spirit, Astrid. What we do know is she was a Vanir worshiper of the Goddess Freya. Out of respect and love for her Queen Freya she made a glorious garden to show her pure appreciation, it was her life's work and she promised to keep its plants in full bloom until the day of Freya's return to Vanaheim. Unfortunately she died before Freya could return, but to add more pain to her lost soul the Einherjar destroyed her precious garden, cursing it and making her soul unable to pass on from the grief. The garden she once cared for in Vanaheim is called Noatun's Garden, due to her presence it is now also called the "Garden of the Dead". Astrid remained loyal to her Queen Freya even after her untimely death, we learn this as we clear her garden. Freya even refers to Astrid as "friend" either to show her love and gratitude for Astrid, or perhaps they were actually close in life before Freya married Odin and moved to Asgard.
