Odin created Asgard from the torn flesh of Ymir, the first giant. The great hall of Valhalla is a part of Asgard, accessible to the Valkyries.

The prophecy about Ragnarök foretells the destruction of Asgard at the hands of Surtr, the first fire giant, who will also die following a battle against Odin and Thor.

Asgard became the home of Freya during her marriage to Odin. She was eventually banished to Midgard and prevented from leaving Midgard or returning to her homeland, Vanaheimr.

At some point, Odin blocked access to Asgard to all those who were not allies to the Aesir. Tyr's temple is unable to access the realm as a result.

God of War (2018)

Odin sends Baldur to seek out the giantess Laufey and bring her back to Asgard for questioning. By the time Baldur locates Laufey's house, she is already dead, though Baldur remains unaware of this and begins hunting down Laufey's husband Kratos and son Atreus.

Baldur decides to kidnap Atreus upon realizing the boy is the "smart one" of the duo. His attempts to take the boy back to Asgard are hindered by Kratos.
