Alvíss was a male dwarf living in Svartalfheim, he was the warden and there was a giant statue built in his honor.

Norse Mythology[]

Alvíss (Old Norse: [ˈɑlˌwiːsː]; "All-Wise") was a dwarf in Norse mythology.

Thor's daughter, Þrúðr, was promised in marriage to Alvíss. Thor was unhappy with the match, however, so he devised a plan: Thor told Alvíss that, because of his small height, he had to prove his wisdom. Alvíss agreed, but Thor made his tests last until dawn, when Alviss, because he was a dwarf, was petrified of being exposed to the sunlight as it would make him turn to stone.

Alvíssmál (Old Norse: 'The Song of All-wise' or 'The Words of All-wise') is a poem collected in the Poetic Edda, probably dating to the 12th century, that describes how the god Thor outwits a dwarf called Alvíss ("All-Wise") who seeks to marry his daughter. Alvíss comes to Thor to claim Thor's daughter as his bride, saying that she had been promised to him earlier. Thor refuses as he had not been at home at the time, then tells Alvíss that he may take the young woman if he can correctly answer all of Thor's questions. The dwarf's replies act as an exhaustive list of the sentient mythological entities among men, Æsir, Vanir, jötnar, dwarfs, and elves. Ultimately, Thor confesses he was asking these questions to gain some time for the sun to rise and turn the dwarf into stone.

God of War: Ragnarök[]

Not much is actually known about the male dwarf Alvíss, but we do know that he was the warden for Svartalfheim and, according to Mimir after being questioned by Freya, he was very intelligent. He was known for using his intelligence to trap the most dangerous creatures the realm of Svartalfheim has. It is apparent that the large Dwarven statue of Alvíss in Svartalfheim, was probably built in his honor. A sign of appreciation for the protection he granted Svartalfheim when he was around. The monumental statue is seated on a rocky terrain and is adorned in a suit of armor, additionally it is carved in a way to make it appear as if he is holding a giant hammer. From the way Mimir speaks of Alvíss and the lack of mention, we can assume by the events of Ragnarök he is already deceased. There are also multiple signs written by him in the game.
